On Tuesday, July 12, the Dutch Senate will debate and vote on ratification of the CETA treaty. The Dutch social democratic party Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) has the deciding vote, and is considering helping the approval of CETA to get a majority. But CETA poses a huge threat to our democracy, the environment and climate, the position of farmers, and much more!

We call on the PvdA to vote down CETA. Not ratifying CETA creates space for an alternative, fair and sustainable trade policy that puts the interests of people, animals and planet above those of the market. Send an email to this prominent social-democratic party member now, to convince him/her to vote down CETA. We've put up an example for you, you can change the text yourself if you want!

Dear Mrs Vos,

On July 12, the Senate will debate CETA, the trade agreement between Canada and the EU that entered into force provisionally in 2017. Your party, the PvdA, has the decisive vote in the Dutch ratification of this treaty.

The Netherlands has a historic opportunity to stop CETA, a treaty that threatens our democracy, the environment and climate, and our agriculture, and thus force the EU to thoroughly revise its trade policy. For trade is a means, not a goal in itself. The goal should be a sustainable and fair global economy that respects national democracy and the rule of law. Certainly for your social democratic party. With this letter I want to share with you my objections to CETA and call on you to vote against it.

- 	Investment protection in CETA undermines our democracy. A foreign investor is given rights that a domestic entrepreneur does not have and can bypass national courts in the process. The European Parliament and national parliaments are being sidelined. The 'Investment Court System' (ICS) allows foreign investors to sue governments, outside of national courts. 
- 	Ratification of CETA will mean an intensification of agriculture and transport emissions. The treaty also protects investments by European oil companies in Canadian tar sands oil and huge shale gas projects. Thus, CETA also poses a serious threat to your ambitious climate policies. 
- 	CETA undermines the viability of the transition to a circular agriculture, due to unfair competition with Canadian farmers who, with weak environmental and animal welfare rules in their home country, can produce much more cheaply.
- 	And what do we get in return? The Treaty, if all expectations come true, will generate about 45 cents per European per week extra. That is not even enough for 1 cup of coffee per month, if that money even ends up in our pockets.

To solve the big problems of our time, international cooperation is certainly needed. But again, trade is a means, not an goal in itself. I therefore call on you to do everything in your power to make the social democratic fraction in the Senate vote against CETA.
